About Us

The WFNS Young Neurosurgeons committee aims to represent and promote the interests of Young Neurosurgeons worldwide.

Our Mission

The Committee aims to act as an advocate and conduit for developing the knowledge, surgical skills, research capability, and career opportunities for young neurosurgeons worldwide in order to align with the WFNS mission of benefiting patients and improving neurosurgical care.

Our Responsibilities

Knowledge

Assist Young Neurosurgeons in developing their knowledge through courses, meetings, webinars and web-based conferences that cover basic and clinical sciences.

Surgical Skills

Assist Young Neurosurgeons in developing their surgical skills through courses, meetings, webinars and web-based conferences tailored to the diverse needs of Young Neurosurgeons worldwide.

Research Capability

Assist Young Neurosurgeons in developing their research capability through training in clinical research methodology and critical appraisal.

Career Development

Assist Young Neurosurgeons in developing their careers by creating a comprehensive database of fellowships and laying the foundation for a program of mentoring.

Members

The WFNS Young Neurosurgeons committee has 17 members from around the world. To ensure a global perspective, we always strive to have equal representation of both men and women neurosurgeons, across all continents.

Ignatius Esene (Chair)

Ignatius is neurosurgery chief at Garoua Regional Teaching Hospital in Cameroon. He is also the chair of the Young African Neurosurgeons Forum, the deputy editor in chief of the Journal of Global Neurosurgery, and co-founder/scientific editor of the Pan African Medical Journal – Clinical Medicine.

Ernest Barthélemy (Co-Chair)

Ernest is a Haitian-American neurosurgeon in New York, USA. Beginning in Summer 2022, he will be associate professor and chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn. He is committed to using global neurosurgery as a vehicle for health system strengthening and social change in Haiti.

Ronnie Baticulon

Ron is professor in anatomy at the University of the Philippines and pediatric neurosurgeon at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila, Philippines. In 2019, the University of the Philippines Press published his book of essays on medical school and neurosurgery training.

Marisa Gandia

Marisa is a neurosurgery consultant at the Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid, Spain. She is a spine specialist who often serves as faculty and organizer at European training courses. She is chair of the Young Neurosurgeons Committee of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies.

Adriana Libório

Adriana is a neurosurgery consultant at Ipanema Federal Hospital in Brazil. She has subspecialty training in functional neurosurgery and neuro-oncology. She is a member of the Brazilian Young Neurosurgeons Committee and is the director of professional activities of Rio de Janeiro Neurosurgery.
